I have a theory that Jerry Krause is trying to trade for names not being mentioned in the paper.
I imagine that there are teams with veterans whom they want to dump but cannot talk about it publicly.
The names that come to mind are

My theory is that other team's General Managers don't want to do business with Krause. I truly believe that Tubby has basicly been blackballed by most players, agents, and GM's and they want to avoid negotiating with him whenever possible. Unc

Your point may be right to a degree, but then why was Chicago included in the Kukoc/Hughes/draft pick trade? The point is that other GM's will deal with Krause if they feel they can help their own clubs, just like Philly did. Unfortunately Kukoc has been the only Bull with any trade value the last 2 seasons and Krause has obviously not been looking to deal away draft picks.
As for Jones and Rice. They definitely used the Bulls to gain negotiating power with their own clubs. But put yourself in their shoes. Would you rather play for a bottom feeder like the Bulls, with so many young players that they are still a few years away from contending. Or would you rather play for Eastern contenders like the Heat and Knicks? If you answer objectively, this question is a no brainer. This was the same advantage the Bulls gained with players when they were a contender.

Portland would want a capable backup, and so the least the Bulls would give up is Crawford.
He is an underreated defender on the low post and on help defense, and a good rebounder on both floors. But he has problems staying in shape, makes frequent mental errors, and loses his temper more than you would expect. Oh yeah, he also can't score from anywhere on the court if his life depended on it. I am sure Utah would love to swap him for another center, but hopefully not with Chicago.
Even though he was mentioned often in trade talks, I think he is a Pitino favorite. I haven't seen many Celtics games, so I don't know what he can do aside from his stats.
Glenn Robinson is talked about, but he is the top player most certain to relocate sometime this season. There is also Iverson, who would demand many players in return for a trade.
Other players not mentioned often
- I believe Allan Houston is on the Block. With Rice, the Knicks can afford to trade him for a great point guard, along with either Childs or Ward (Van Exel? Strickland?).
- There is Shawn Bradley, who amazingly still has teams drooling over his size and failure to use it.
- The entire Pacers team might be on the block, considering Jackson ran away and they traded away the untradeable Dale Davis.
- I hear Derrick Coleman is close to wearing out his welcome with his non-stop off-court problems.
- Mutombo being in his last year, might be shopped around if the Hawks don't want to risk losing him in FA.
- I have a feeling Van Horn is no longer needed in New Jersey with Kenyon, since he has said in the past that he doesn't want to play small forward.
- And the team with the most players on the trading block is Washington, since Jordan has publicly said that no-one is untouchable (but probably not Hamilton). Strickland, Howard, and Richmond will certainly be shopped around.

Why can't they talk about it publicly??
If their current teams are supposedly so eager to dump them why do we want them??
Who do have to trade for anybody either in terms of actual talent or comparable salary?

Well, it's something to hope for, at least...
First, most of the players that GM's are looking to get rid of are going to have pretty high salaries. It will be hard for the Bulls to match salaries to get many of these players...
I would think that the following are probably on the block:
Anybody on the Wizards - Jordan stated that nobody was untouchable and I have no doubt that he means it Derrick Coleman - all star talent, petty thug mentality Allan Iverson - same as above, but at least performs Glen Robinson - pretty much out with the promises made to Taylor Mutumbo - last year of his contract that neither he nor Atlanta seem to want to continue Van Horn - with Martin, do they still need Van Horn? Allan Houston - now that they have Rice, maybe Houston is on his way out Finley - it seems that there is a lot of doubt that Finley will return next year when his contract runs out, maybe they'll put him on the block to get something out of him (although I think that they could sign and trade him next year even if he does decide he is not going back)

Who didn't know Ewing was going to be traded??
Assuming some team does have a logjam at a position they aren't going to trade whomever they believe is the most talented player at that position even assuming we have something to give them in return which we don't. This is going nowhere.

Right, but it wasn't a case of the Knicks saying that they were dying to get rid of Ewing
